Your Home Renovation Checklist

Is it time to begin your home renovation project? Not so fast! Use our home renovation and remodeling checklist to make sure you’re properly prepared for your redesign.

  • 1. Write Your Wish List

Create a list of what’s most important to get out of your remodel. These will be your top priorities throughout the project and should not be overlooked. How you feel about your final product will depend on how these key factors turn out, so it’s important to keep them at a high priority.

    PRO TIP:

List out everything that’s important to you and your family and prioritize these factors by most important to least important. Make sure you’re not just thinking of style and trend, but also functionality.

  • 2. Establish a Reasonable Budget

The key word here is reasonable! Conduct research on the specific type of renovation you’re considering so you can get a rough estimate of how much it will cost. If you realize your dream redesign goes over the amount you have to spend, look for areas that can be postponed until later. Splitting up your remodel is a good way to get everything you want without breaking your bank!

    PRO TIP:

When you estimate your budget, overestimate the total cost or keep a little bit of extra cash aside. You’ll be happy you have a slush fund if you encounter any expensive obstacles throughout your renovation.

  • 3. Search for the Perfect Contractor

How can you find the right contractor for your project? By knowing exactly what you want! The best way to pick out a contractor is by recognizing what you’re looking for and finding a team who can deliver.

A few ways to start your contractor search are to:

    • Collect referrals from friends, neighbors, colleagues (Use Facebook’s Recommendations feature to ask your Facebook friends for suggested contractors)

    • Do a Google search (try “Contractors near me”)

    • Read online reviews

  • 4. Create Your Contract

Once you have your contractor selected, you’ll need to draw up a written outline. It should include your budget, timeline, and the details of your upcoming remodeling project. Review the entire contract in depth with your contractor and keep a copy for yourself.

    PRO TIP:

When designing the timeline portion of your contract, consult with your contractor about making sure it’s reasonable. What’s the point of a schedule if it’s unable to be followed?

  • 5. Communicate With Your Family

Whether it’s your children or roommates, make sure everyone who is currently living in the house is on the same page regarding the renovation. The remodel may require access to certain rooms and space in the driveway for trucks and equipment, so keep all members of the household updated on exactly what to expect.

    PRO TIP:

When designing the remodeling schedule, run everything through the members of your household and get them to agree on everything before you sign off with the contractor. Communication is the key to a happy home!

  • 6. Store Away Valuables

If you have antiques or items that are irreplaceable, it’s a good idea to store them away during your remodel. You should feel comfortable with your team of contractors, but accidents happen. Don’t let being unprepared cost you your favorite painting or one-of-a-kind vase. If you’re worried about an item getting damaged, store it away. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

    PRO TIP:

Designate a room in your home that should remain untouched by the renovation. It can be the room you turn to when your house feels like it’s in chaos or the place where all valuable items are stored.
